Obituary of Lloyd Kerr

Please share a memory of Lloyd to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

LLOYD WINSTON KERR was born at Wawota, SK on August 25, 1918.  In 1930, the family moved north to homestead in the Torch River district.  In 1940, Lloyd enlisted in the RCNVR (Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve) at Regina, SK for basic training & then transferred to Esquimalt, BC.  On September 13, 1941 he began a 7000 mile voyage on the newly built minesweeper, HMCS Malpeque, via the Panama Canal to Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Lloyd took ASDIC (Anti- Submarine Detection) training there & later qualified for HSD (Higher Submarine Detector) & Leading Seaman.  In August 1943 Lloyd was drafted to HMCS Hamilton, a destroyer based out of Cornwallis, Nova Scotia which was allocated for training purposes.  As a Leading Seaman, he trained new recruits in the operation of ASDIC equipment, echo sounder & seamanship.  Most of the training was done in the Bay of Fundy.  Lloyd was discharged at the end of WWII and returned to Torch River.

Lloyd attended Prairie Apostolic Bible Institute for 3 years & graduated in the spring of 1949. In December 1949, Lloyd married Hazel Doris Fillier of St John’s, Newfoundland whom he had met while in the Navy.  Lloyd & Hazel made their home at Torch River on land they had purchased through the VLA.  They had 2 children, Don & Lorraine.  He also managed the Torch River Co-op store from 1966 until it closed in 1983.  He & Hazel moved to Nipawin.  But retirement was not for Lloyd so he continued to help on the farm and raise cattle on his own until age 95.

He lived independently in his own home until September 2017 at which time he went to Rosetown to be cared for by his favourite nurse, his daughter Lorraine.  He lived life to the full – always contented and at peace to the time of his death.

Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, Ryan & Alta (Christopher) Kerr, his wife Hazel, his brothers Howard (Rachael), Lawrence, Irwin & Ryan, his sisters Iris (Mike Watson), Muriel (Art Neufeld), Lois (Bob Clay), Patricia (Arthur Stitt), brothers-in-law James (Isabelle) Fillier & Robert (Eleanor) Fillier.

Left to treasure his memory are his son Don (Lori) of Torch River & daughter Lorraine (Bill Lindberg) of Rosetown, sister Ruth (Don Reimer), sister-in-law Pearl Kerr, brother-in-law Eustace Saul as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended families.

Lloyd’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude & appreciation for your support at this time.
