I got to know Hilde when I first moved to Nipawin, after contacting her and asking if we might get together for German conversation. Although my initial purpose was to learn more of the language, our visits soon became a friendship. Indeed, Hilde became an important figure not only to me, but to my entire young family. Over the few years we were in Nipawin, Hilde spent hours at our house, and we spent even more at hers - enjoying her spectacular cakes, and the best coffee around. She was the consummate host. On our first visit to Germany as a family, I was happy to have made it to her hometown of Wiesbaden, and of nearby Bingen - after whose patron saint she was named - and to have been able to send her a postcard expressing my delight at seeing so many of the places she had told me about. For as well as having developed my language with her, she was very much a cultural teacher, and I felt when I finally arrived in Germany that it was already quite familiar to me. In that respect. she was instrumental in helping me connect to myself. Ultimately, Hilde was a woman of deep feeling, immense strength, unparalleled bravery, and wonderful - if subtle - humour. She will always be remembered with love in our house as 'Oma Hilde', and forever in our prayers as a woman who gave us so much more than these few words can express. May her memory be eternal.

It was deep regret that I heard of Hilde passing. She would have known me by name of Bob, as I was friends of Erich Deutschmann and family. She was a super great lady and I really enjoyed visiting her home for coffee when she lived east of Nipawin.

My deepest sympathy to Hilda's family. I so enjoyed working with Hilda at Pineview Lodge years ago, she always had me laughing about something. She was a great lady and friend. She knew me as Darlene Fox.
