Obituary of Gladys Burton

Gladys was born in December 1929 to William and Mary Jane Craik (Carruthers); the third youngest of 11 children. In 1948 she married James (Jim) Burton and together they made a home in Nipawin with sons Allan (1951) and Gordon (1954). Nieces Doris and Vivian and nephew Robert joined the family (1967) after the tragic loss of their parents. In time, Aunty Gladys become “Second Mom” to these three, and Grandma and GG to their children and grandchildren. 

 

Growing up west of Codette was mixed with family, sorrow (loss of her dad when stil a young girl), work, and fun. This upbringing fostered a love for day-to-day activities such as fishing and more fishing, picking berries (especially blueberries), sledding, cross-country skiing, playing baseball and board games, puzzling, handy-work, quilting and teaching Susie-homemaking skills to grandchildren and nieces. It also fostered a lovel of travel. Beginning with a trip east to the Niagara Falls to pick fruit with her sister Dora, both teenagers at the time. Gladys continued with many trips to visit family and friends. She travelled much of the USA, including Hawaii and Alaska, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

 

Gladys was committed to the community-at-large as she volunteered with a number of local organizations-with her heart, soul, and time. The Rebekah’s (the women’s branch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows built on the principles of friendship, love and truth) was her #1 organization. She tirelessly committed hours and hours of service for over 35 plus years to meet community and organizational needs. She held numerous executive positions during these years. 

 

Gladys wanted to be a “nurse". She provided nursing and/or “mothering” informally for family members, friends and at least one hospital patient. Her caring heart was huge.

 

Gladys welcomed family and friends to any of her many homes (house in Nipawin, cabin at Lower Fishing Lake and ski-doo shack west of Codette) to hang out day and night. It was not unusual for her to stay up into to the wee hours of the morning to play…one more game!

 

Gladys was predeceased by her parents, her 10 siblings, her husband, one son, one granddaughter and numerous nephews, niece, and cousins.

 

She is lovingly celebrated, remembered and will be forever missed by her: children: Al (Vi), Doris, Viv (Len), Robert (Tammy); grandchildren:Tanis (Chris), Rhett (Eunjoo), Lana (Andy), Tylor, Nicole; Shaan (Rhonda), Crystal (Kris); Dennis (Erika); Jordan, Coralee; great grandchildren- Abigail, Chloe; Jaymen, Rohnan; Kataryna, Maycia, Taitan; Dade, Lincoln; Zack, Amy, Conner, Austin; 

great great grandchild-Merritt;

numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
