Obituary of Helen Carriere

Helen Suzette Carriere (nee: Goulet) was born in February, 1940 in Sturgeon Landing, SK to Joseph and Virginie (Dussion) Goulet. Helen lived in Cumberland House for most of her life until ill health had her move to Pineview Lodge in Nipawin. She left for a brief time to work at the Guy Hill Residential School in The Pas, but she returned home to assist her father with taking care of Joe and Karen. Helen attended the one room school in Cumberland House along with her siblings where she completed Grade 8. Years later, Helen took a variety of classes offered by the Community College including how to knit which led to ensuring her children had mitts, toques, and scarves for the winter. Helen married the love of her life, Douglas Arthur Carriere, on September 1, 1979 with their children and family present. It was a very special celebration of their union, and Father George was so very happy to perform the marriage celebration. Helen worked at the Hudson Bay Store before it was moved to its present location that is now known as the Northern. She worked as a cashier, stocked shelves then ended as the butcher. She also worked at Mohawk Gas bar as a cashier and baker. Helen worked as a cook for Sisip Outfitting, and she loved to share how the Americans loved to eat traditional meals. Helen loved working and having the opportunity to serve the people of the island. It kept her busy with extra cash, so she could enjoy her favorite hobby of playing bingo. It was there that many of her grandkids would find her with her cards, roll of loonies or toonies, and smoking with her fellow bingo card players. She would often play muchee bingo at Juta’s or Hilda’s which could go on until late in the night. “Our momma surely loved her muchee bingo games”. Helen loved to watch “The Price is Right” and did not miss an episode. She was always telling the contestants how far to go or what to bid then would say that they should have listened to her. Helen was a single parent who worked very hard to provide for her children when there was no running water, electricity, and furnaces. Helen hauled water, chopped wood, and kept the fire going in the home. The children were taught to take over these chores as they got older. We recall momma saying “make sure you don’t get the yellow snow” when we got snow to melt in the winter. Helen made the best soup from what appeared to be from nothing along with fresh Bannock made before her children woke up for the day. Helen was a devout Catholic throughout her life and said her rosary on a daily basis. Helen prayed for all her children, the family and community. Helen loved to sing and sang in Cree at Church. Whenever Helen baked or cleaned her home, she would often break out in song. Helen is survived by: Her Children: Elaine (Barry) McLeod, Pierre (Marie) Goulet, Melvina Goulet, Karen (Joe Shady) McLeod, Bradley Goulet, Douglas Carriere, and Brennan Carriere. Helen raised, cared for, and loved Margaret Mckenzie and Jeffery Michelle, and considered them her children.
